TEN-POINT CHECKLIST TO KEEP
YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR PROPERTY SAFE AND SECURE
-
Every family
dwelling should have working smoke detectors on each level of the property
as per Toronto city by-laws.
-
Every family
dwelling should have at least one, normally two carbon-monoxide detectors as
per Toronto city by-laws.
-
Fire
extinguishers should be kept on the premises in case of emergency.
-
Fire-proof
safe or document box is strongly advised to ensure valuable documents do not
perish in a fire situation.
-
New owners
should consider changing locks, especially the front door lock as previous
owners, relatives and neighbours may still have keys.
-
Motion-sensing exterior flood-lights will deter potential thieves from
trespassing.
-
Reconnect
existing security system to a monitoring station is a cheap and effective
deterrent. Also, your insurance company will give you a reduction on
your premiums with a monitored security system.
-
Install new
security system as needed and ensure it is monitored to receive your
insurance discount.
-
Install
intercom to front door. This enables you to talk to callers without opening
your front door thereby ensuring your safety. These systems can have audio
and video and can be integrated with your existing telephone and cable T.V.
systems.
-
Install
surveillance cameras throughout your property. These cameras can be
digitally-recorded and viewed at the location and off-site via a high-speed
internet connection.
